In the comments of my post yesterday about how Your Small List Can Equal Big Profits, Suresh Knanal from ICTtrends.com posed the following question:

I don’t have any product yet to sell, Do I need to start building mailing lists? What shall I make use of it?

Suresh makes an interesting point. The reason I made all the money from the one email was because we had our own product, but what if you do not have your own product – is it still necessary to build a list?

The Simple Answers… ‘YES!!!’

One of the benefits of internet marketing is the fact that there are so many of us.

While some of you might think that this just increases our competition – I beg to differ. Instead I see it as a large pool of potential JV partners. With so many of these internet marketers desperate to sell more copies of their products they are willing to pay big commission if you are able to find buyers for the product.

I know this is a simple concept for some of you, but it may also be an eye opener for others.

The reason that I have not created my own product yet is because I don’t have a big enough following yet to have a successful and profitable product launch – but that is the same reason I am building my list.

Start With The End In Mind

If you have the desire to create your own product to sell online, then wouldn’t it make sense to create an large email list of subscribers that will be interested in your product?

But building a list takes time, so how do you cover the costs of your Aweber account for 12-18 months while you are building your list big enough and your reputation strong enough to create a successful product launch?

Recommend Products In Your Niche

With Aweber costing about $19 a month – with your first month free, you know that you have to at least make $20 a month from your list to make it pay for itself.

Now cutting back to all the internet marketers willing to pay you to sell their products, how many would you really have to sell each month to break even? Probably just one!

If you visit ClickBank or PayDotCom

, you will find 100′s (maybe 1,000′s) of ebooks, software and much more, with commissions of up to 75%. You will find the majority of these will provide commissions of $20 or more.

But How Do You Find The Right Products To Promote To Your List?

It may all be good and well that there are so many products that we COULD sell, but which ones will be the best to promote? Which ones SHOULD we sell?

There are 3 things you should look for when choosing what products to promote to your list:

  1. Must Fit Your List

Why Are People Subscribed To Your List?

Once you can answer this question, you can easily find multiple products that will solve you subscribers problems.

The easiest way to do this is to visit the ClickBank marketplace and do a search for the topic of your blog.

This will bring up a heap of products for you to consider!

  2. Must Have Credibility

Don’t Recommend Anything That You Would Not Consider Buying

This is one of the most important thing when it comes to list building – your integrity.

Don’t ever promote anything that you have not either personally tried and recommend, know the creator personally and can vouch for their content, or is extremely popular and real testimonials can be used to verify the quality.

This is the main reason I chose Market Samurai as the main product that I promote on this blog and to my list, because:

    • I Personally Use And Love The Product
    • Over 100,000 Users Vouch For The Quality
  3. Must Convert Well

Make your making efforts worthwhile and test to see which product converts best.

The thing you will find when you start promoting products through your list, is that some products will work really well for you, while others won’t make you a single sale.

If you have sent a couple of emails promoting a product and you are not getting a response – then maybe it is time to try another one.

Coming back to why I chose Market Samurai as the product I would focus on promoting through my list, I just love the way they promote their product.

You see, all I have to do is encourage people to download a full-featured, trial copy of Market Samurai and they do all the follow up, and I get a nice commission for each person who purchases the software.

So you can see that it is not necessary to have your own product to start building your own list.

What is stopping your from building that list?

My blog is actually new and the traffic is less. As I have seen on other blogs most of them use aweber and offer something for free like buildthatlist is offering squeeze pages, I am not sure what can really impress visitors to subscribe.

When it comes to aweber, it is really costly from the second month, while mailchimp offers first 500 subscribers for free, so it would really be helpdul if you could compare aweber, getaresponse and mailchimp. Also, if possible, please make a post why have you chosen aweber?

Thank You.

Great post, list building is something I am just now beginning to play with (I have been missing out I guess :-) ) so I like the Q&A you did here.

My question would be, and I know all the big names recommend Aweber, is it ok to use something else to begin with and test, something open source. I always like to try before I buy LOL

@Akash – That is a really good point. I have tried GetResponse before but never MailChimpo. I will look at getting a comparison post out on them all over the next week. I started using Aweber because I got a lot of people recommending it to me.

@Keith – The only thing with list building is that it is hard to transfer your list once you have started. So if you decided that you want to change to Aweber, you will either lose a lot of your list – because they have to opt in again, or you will have to start from scratch. That is why MailChimp is good, because they have a free period up until you have 500 subscribers – I think.

Tom, actually I have a great idea in my mind and I guess I will soon be ready with that. I will surely get back to you after executing that.

By the way, your posts are really very good and inspiring, I knew about AWeber before too, but I guess buildthatlist really inspired me to build up my list :)

Thanx…!

Great article, really enjoyed reading that and learnt a lot. As someone who has pondered over and over about whether to start a list, started one, then decided against it (you get the point!) this post has given a bit of “cement” to the whole list building thing… I think I’ll give it a try soon!

@Akash! – Thankyou! It is great to hear when you have insured someone, and I can’t wait to hear this idea you have!

@Simon – I know exactly how you feel. I must have started and stopped list building about 5 times, but I know that it works and so I keep coming back to it. Cant wait to see your list growing massive!

well some of the famous marketers would say no because list building is essential even when just getting started (means no product)

Hey Tom;

What I’d like to know is the “mechanics” behind a good list building strategy. For example:

You seem to have 1 SIGNUP field (that is GOOD – SIMPLE!). So by signing up your readers they automatically get:

A) A FREE Incentive
B) EMAIL UPDATES FOR NEW POSTS (?????)
C) The ability for you to send them ‘drip marketing’ offers

Is that correct?

So, does the basic out of the box configuration of Aweber allow you to setup 1 SIGNUP with those 3 FUNCTIONS?

Does anyone know if MAILCHIMP allows you to setup the same 3 functions?

An experienced blogger also mentioned that Mailchimp actually costs MORE than Aweber once you have to start paying for it (aI have not confirmed this – he’s an affiliate of Aweber).

To reiterate: I want a ilist building system that does 3 things in 1 signup:

1. Deliver a free incentive download/report/PDF etc.
2. Send automatic Email updates to those who signup everytime I create a new blog post
3. Allows me to send offers or updates from time to time to my list.

Recommendations?

That is a really good question, and something I think I will give a more detailed answer in an upcoming post (thanks!).

I usually keep my email list and my rss list quite separate. Personally I do not send all my email subscribers a new email each time a new post is written (that is what RSS is for). while this certainly can be done with Aweber through their ‘Blog Broadcast’ feature, I find that email list subscribers and RSS subscribers are two totally different types of people.

1. RSS Subscribers
These people are here for your content, and make up the bulk of your commenters. They subscribed for your content and provide the community around your blog.

2. Email List Subscribers
Usually more product orientated. While you are usually ‘bribing’ them to join your list with free information. It usually comes in the form of an ebook or report. These people are looking for something more than what your rss readers expect.

I personally try to limit the promotion of products on my blog. I want my blog and the posts to be content rich and build a credibility and rapport with my readers – My blog is about community.

Where as my email list is my life blood. These are the people who have read my content. I have built the rapport with and they are wanting more. So while I may provide shorter versions of my posts as content emails, the majority of contact with my list is for 3 main reasons:

1. To network with them
2. To continue to nurture them (with premium content and free products)
3. Promote quality products too.

I personally do not use my list as a weekly newsletter, or send each post as it is released – but that doesn’t mean that you cannot. It is all about finding what works for you personally, and working with that.

Does that make sense Don?

I also forgot to touch on the free incentive.

This is something that you can easily include into your followup process. Once someone has submitted their email adress, they are sent a confirmation email to comply with SPAM regulations.

Once they have confirmed, this is when you follow up sequence starts. You can have as many or as little as you like ( I personally have only set up one follow up email that introduces myself and provides them with a link to their free download).

I cannot really say much about mailchimp (as I only just started playing around with it). I personally prefer Aweber, but that could just be because I have been using it for so long -and change takes time to get used io.

Hey Tom!

Thanks for your replies.

Well, I use Email signup as a way to follow new posts from bloggers that I like. I don’t like the RSS reader interface and I think most experienced bloggers have so many feeds in their reader that Email updates is a much better way to stay on people’s radar (of course I still have an RSS feed button available for those who want it).

I also like the incentive download thing.

But truly – what is a list for if it isn’t for marketing products?

I think, for my situation, I just have to go ahead and try it – talking and planning is really keeping me back at this point.

Now, if I could just find a good Aweber vs Mailchimp comparison post…

Thanks Tom!

Very good article, I am starting to build my list, but I am thinking of making my own products as well as promoting someone else’s.

There are loads of internet marketing courses, that suggest its easier to promote someone else’s products. I feel it will be nice to do both.
