Have you ever wondered why a lot of your dreams never get accomplished?
Maybe that is because it does not pass the ‘wet manure’ test!
I know exactly what you are thinking…’What does manure have to do with goals’ – especially wet manure (because that is just gross!)
Would You Shovel Wet Manure To Achieve Your Goals?
If I was to ask you what your long term goals are, what would they be?
Would it be:
- To Pay Off Your Mortgage?
- To Upgrade Your Car?
- To Travel Overseas?
Now all of those dreams sound great – don’t they? Would you be motivated to build your list and work online to try and make enough to pay off your mortgage?
If you say yes, then let me ask you another question…
Would You Be Willing To Shovel Wet Manure For Two Hours Each Day For Those Goals?
I don’t know about you, but those goals don’t seem that important anymore.
There is no way that you would get me to shovel cow poo (or whatever type of poo you choose) just to upgrade my car, or travel overseas. While those goals are nice – I am not willing to make that type of sacrifice!
Wet Manure = Hard Work
It would be safe to say that the wet manure in this statement is an analogy for hard work.
Many times we will say that we are committed to our goals, but when we realise that it is going to take a lot more work than we expected – we give up.
This really makes me wonder we were ever committed to our goals in the first place, or if it was just a ‘it would be nice if….’ type of pipe dream.
Are You Sold Out To Your Goals?
Look back over your goals and revisit the ‘wet manure’ question.
Would you really be willing to shovel wet manure for 2 hours each day – if it meant you achieved your goals?
If not, then maybe it is time to re-evaluate your goals!
You will only achieve the goals that you are committed to.
What Are Your No Compromise Goals?
If your current goals did not pass the test, then you need to dig a little deeper. Do you have any goals that you will not compromise on? Goals that you do not even give yourself the option of failing.
What Would You Be Willing To Shovel Wet Manure To Achieve?
I don’t know about you, but as gross as it sounds – here is an example of something that I would shovel wet manure!
To Not Miss Out On My Child Growing Up
With my wife and I currently expecting our first child, one of my ‘no compromise, wet manure test passing’ goals is to be an active participator in my my child’s life.
I don’t want our family to be a family where the father goes to work early and comes home late – tired, leaving the wife and mother to become somewhat of a single parent. I want to be home to see our child’s first steps, to experience the joys of being a father.
For me this is a NO COMPROMISE!
Why We Need Wet Manure Goals…
If you are considering or currently working towards making money online, then you are going to need some pretty strong ‘wet manure passing goals’!
Everyone gets sold the dream that making money online (whether it be by blogging, product creation, list building or bum marketing), is easy and you are going to make a full-time income is just a few short months.
While this may be true for some people, for the majority of us, it is going to take a lot of hard work, unsuccessful attempts and more hard work.
If you don’t have any no compromise goals, then when it all starts getting tough and you feel ready to give up – you will! There is nothing that will make you pick yourself back up and start again. Nothing that will push you forward through the problems.
The new car and the holiday will not help, you need to dig deeper if you want to succeed!
Now, let’s start discussing! Do you have an ‘Wet Manure Passing Goals’? Do you think you need goals to success? Share your thoughts and let’s see what we can come up with!

Haha, is this your own concept? It’s great, but even so, taking it lightly.
I was thinking myself, “Is this about touching wet manure?,” and realized a true dream or goal, you be more than willing to shovel it and maybe even bury your face in it.
Let me put it this way, if I knew for a fact…better said even had a contract written establishing all my dreams to be met…well, I think you get the idea!

@Shaun – I actually stole the concept from a cd I was listening to the other day, but I just love the concept because it really makes you think about how committed to your goals you really are!
Thanks for the comment!

Really enjoyed reading that Tom, makes a change from the usual “here’s some information, read it” kind of article. I suppose most serious bloggers and internet marketers would be willing to shovel manure. I mean, obviously people aren’t scared of the hard work as consistently writing quality articles, advertising and general website upkeeping is bloody hard work! :p

Great metaphor, no matter where you got it. This reminds me of the toilet paper commercial with the bears in the woods. Love it or hate it, people remember it.

@Simon – Glad you liked it. It’s nice to mix things up and keep your readers guessing! I definitely think that it is the consistent hard work that wears away the majority of bloggers.
@Hal – I’m not sure I’ve seen that ad before, anyone who has feel free to link me to a youtube video

LOL… Tom, I love the title… This is a good way to put life in perspective.
I can tell you didn’t grow up on a farm… I did and I’ve had the luxury of shoveling wet manure and silage for hours on end… It’s hard work, humbling and gross…
As nasty and as bad as it sounds… it is.
BTW… Congrats on being a dad.. Our 2nd is due today… so she’ll be here anytime…

Very interesting – If you’d be willing to shovel wet manure then that means you have the drive and determination to carry on. I guess it also means that your goals are worth so much, that you just won’t give up along the way.

Hm, this is an interesting concept. I think it may also depend on each person’s values and experience, as well as the goals themselves. For example, shoveling wet manure doesn’t seem all that terrible to me. I’d definitely do it if it meant I achieve some of my goals. In fact, I think it would be easier because most high goals in life require a combination of intelligence, planning, determination, etc. But shoveling requires only persistence. So in my opinion it would be easier than actually doing the things necessary for achieving my goals. I’d gladly take shoveling for 2 hours a day over going to work for 8 hours!

@Brian – I am glad you liked it! And thanks, it is due in July and very exciting.
@Ruth – Thats exactly it. It’s finding those things that will continue to drive you through the tough times.
Jason – I knew there was going to be a ‘ shoveling poo isn’t that bad’ comment, and I do agree with you. The analogy and question is just there to get you thinking about your goals!

I love the analogy that you used here! It is so true! It takes choice, commitment and sacrifice to accomplish our goals. But in the end, we should be doing these things with joy because of what we “getting” in return!
Great post!

@Kevin – I totally agree! If we are doing things that we do not find joy in (even if it is just because of the desired outcome) then maybe we need to reassess if we are doing the right thing for us at the time.

Tom,
Love this article. And I worked on a horse-powered farm for a year, so I know from shoveling manure! I love hard work, especially when it is contributing to your life’s goals. I read Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, not too long ago, and loved the concept he discusses of mastery – in order to be positioned for true excellence in your chosen field, investing 10,000 hours doing it seems to be the minimum. Those who succeed in extraordinary ways may be “in the right place at the right time” and have the opportunities, but they have also paid their dues, put their noses to the grindstone, and sweated blood. Thanks for the great analogy. I’m inspired to continue shoveling poo. ;->

goals are very important for success.
goals not written down usually don’t get done.
well, your post really got me thinking about my goals and your wet manual routine.
we can only hard work hard on goals we truly value.
thanks ..

Tom,
this was a sobering post indeed! Thanks. It’s good to think about these things beforehand, rather than wasting many months of years even only to find out that you really weren’t sold out to it.
A classic example of this is my experience of working at Starbucks years ago, I had two supervisors with college degrees. When I asked them why they were at starbucks they both said along the lines of:
“right after I graduated I realized, the field I got a degree in isn’t really what I want to do”

So many people aren’t willing to put in the time, that’s why their blogs are abandoned in a few short weeks. For those who persevere, the work definitely pays off.

Tom -
Brilliant concept and beautifully executed. This cuts right to the heart of motivation and what is really important. I’m going to re-examine my goals list in this light. As a new father to be, you’ll probably have your fare share of wet manure to deal with to fulfil your goals in this area – good luck and thanks!

If the goals meant enough to me then I’d be willing to do anything reasonble to do it (as long as it was legal and ethical)
As long as the motivation is strong I can’t see much getting in the way.
[Reply]
@Matthew – And that is how it should be! I love how you made not that it had to be legal and ethical!

I agree that to achieve goals in life you do have to work hard. There are so many people who live in a dream world and are forever saying “wouldn’t it be great if…” and they never get any further than that. You have to take action if you are going to succeed in life. Often when someone is successful, those people who watch the world pass them by say “wow they are so lucky”. Success is rarely down to luck although it might play a part. You create your own luck through opening up opportunities.

I will say if I only had to shovel wet manure for 2 hours a day for a month, I would do it in a heartbeat to accomplish my goals but I see what you’re getting at. Making the money is very hard work but if you ready for the work, its worth it. Setting goals is crucial, in my opinion, and it keeps you going. Keep up the good work!
